CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY

The Citizen Police Academy was originated in 1995 and is an eleven week program designed to present to the public an overview of law enforcement and police operations.   Courses include criminal law, juvenile law, crime scene investigation, the use of force, and much more.  One academy is offered each year and classes are normally held on Wednesday evenings between 6:30 until 9:30 at the City Hall.  The class is open to all residents of Hickory Hills and class size is limited.  For further information, call (708) 598-4900.

BLOCK HOME PROGRAM

The Block Home program was instituted in Hickory Hills in 1987 to provide a safe haven for children in the city in case of danger or injury.  Selected area residents are designated by the police department and are identified by bright yellow signs in the front doors and windows of participating homes.  Children can go to these homes in cases of emergency for safety.  Homeowners receive special instruction on the handling of these situations and are instructed to contact the police immediately.

CHILD SAFETY SEAT INSPECTION PROGRAM

On the average, 90 to 95 percent of all child safety seats are installed incorrectly, leaving children virtually unprotected.  In response to this alarming fact, the city of Hickory Hills offers free child safety seat inspections and/or installations at the Hickory Hills police station.  Call 708/598-1313 to set up an appointment with Officer Scott Sodaro, a certified child safety seat technician.  Residents and non-residents are welcome.  This is an ongoing program which the police department offers 365 days a year.  For more information, on child safety, visit the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Association) at www.nhtsa.dot.gov or call the Department of Transportation / Auto Safety Hotline toll-free at 1-888-327-4236.

D.A.R.E.  PROGRAM

The D.A.R.E. Program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) was developed by the Los Angeles Police Department in 1983.  Illinois adopted the program and the Hickory Hills Police Department began teaching DARE in 1989.  This program is designed to educate children in the 5th grade about the hazards of using drugs, how drugs effect their decision making process, peer pressure, and self-esteem.  Uniformed officers teach the DARE program in all of our local schools.  For further information about this important program, please follow the link or call (708) 598-4900.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PROGRAM

The Neighborhood Watch program is a crime prevention program which solicits the help of area residents and business owners to act as the extra "eyes and ears" of the Hickory Hills Police Department.  The focus of this program is to watch for and report suspicious activity within the community.  For more information, contact us at (708) 598-4900.
