Message from the Chief of Police

As a veteran police officer with over thirty one years of service and a professional administrator I am well aware of the need for law enforcement to adapt to constant cultural and social changes. That is why our agency continues to evaluate effectiveness and engage in short term, as well as, long term strategic planning. Each supervisor establishes short term shift goals on a quarterly basis, provides contributions to long term agency goals, and establishes annual personal goals. Input from the community, as well as crime trends, are incorporated into this process. These particular endeavors continue to have a significant impact upon the established philosophy of our agency.

I strongly believe that the core element to improved effectiveness is imbedded in partnerships formed with various community groups, organizations, businesses, victims of crime, and all those who utilize police services. One such community project currently underway is with the Art Club at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School. The students, under the direction of Wes Gonzalez, have designed and are in the process of painting a ten foot mural depicting the various segments of the police department’s unity of support. Once completed, this mural will be erected on the wall of the employee entrance stairwell at the police station and will serve as a constant reminder of each officer’s roll in the preservation of peace in our community.

The Police Department’s traffic safety program was also recognized on a national level in 2007 by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. The Department was chosen as the first place winner in their respective category. This competition recognizes and rewards the best overall traffic safety programs in the United States. The first place banner is currently on display in the lobby of City Hall.

Two key individual qualities necessary to achieve the goals of our agency and that of law enforcement in general are compassion and empathy. Combined with fortitude and resilience, officers who possess these qualities will persistently strive to improve the quality of life for all those residing in and frequenting our community. As Chief of Police, it is my responsibility to ensure the accomplishment of the stated mission and goals of our agency.
